Kristen Shoot

Kristen Shoot

A few years ago I was working as a network admin for a law firm called Adorno & Yoss. I have good memories from back then. One of the attorneys working there was Kristen. I always wanted to ask her for a shoot, but being an employee there I felt that asking one of the attorneys to pose for me may come off as...rude? So I never bothered.

Death of a Mermaid

Death of a Mermaid

I was looking through some of my unpublished work the other day when I come across this shot. It was a bikini/swim wear sunrise photo shoot. The problem was that the clouds completely blocked off the sunrise and as such I was forced to try other things, other camera angles to try to salvage the morning. In this particular shot, I asked the model to lie down on the sand for some shots, when she recommended perhaps doing a topless concept, but being covered with sea weed. Winston, my assistant, was with me so I take a look at him. I felt a bit shy about the notion since there were people at the beach and I'm not used to shooting implied in public places. I said go for it.

Amy Training

Amy is a co-worker with a background in graphic design. Often times, when I used to work in her office, she would come along and show me and another IT Co-Worker some of her work. Never failing to impress us, she one day showed me her photographic work using a point-n-shoot camera. Since then I have encouraged her to purchase a DSLR for her photography. She finds out later on that I shoot photographs for fun.

Katie Shoot

Katie Shoot

I had the honor of photographing a lead clothing designer in South Florida recently, Katie from www.ShopTruffle.com. The original intent of this shoot was to shoot simple shots with a white background to add to a web catalog. Nothing fancy was required. I did go ahead and did the simple white background thing, but while editing I noticed how colorful her clothing line was, so it sparked an idea. Why not make the background a bit more interesting and augment the colors she is wearing in the shots? Paint! I have also been experimenting with a different editing technique on the skin. Keep in mind, she made the clothing herself. Enjoy.

About the Photo - Face of Suicide

I took this photograph about 3 years or so ago. I call this one, "Face of Suicide".  I do not remember the model's name per say, but I do remember that we were just driving in Kendall looking for a "cool spot" to shoot at. Ahh, back in the day, I just winged it. A model and I would hop into a car, and just drive around unknown locations in hopes of finding something neat. Now I plan too much...perhaps it's time I go back to my original style of shooting.

Anyways, the model and I found a neat looking building that appeared to be abandoned. This was in the Kendall area. It seemed that the house was not maintained at all. The grass was taller than we were! It was kinda spooky really. It was odd that we found planks of wood and construction equipment lying around, collecting dust. Saws were rusty, a sanding machine with dusty sand paper everywhere...but what we found inside was neat! We found a very old piano, dusty and keys missing. We found a pinball machine, and we found slides of photographs everywhere. The photographs depicted a family. Interesting I said to myself.

While looking around this house, the skies turned dark and it began to rain. Thunder soon followed. I confessed to the model, "Fuck, I'm scared as shit but lets shoot!!!". She was scared too and we continued with our shoot. (The photograph in the background of my website was also taken during this shoot.)

While shooting I came upon this room. I felt something eerie and creepy about this room. I felt like there was a GIANT SMILE in the room and I could not help but envision a floating image in this room. A ghost of sorts, or something. What would it say? I asked myself. "Kill yourself".

I'm creeped out just writing this lol. Anyways, I had a vision and I wanted to capture it! All in the name of photography right!!! With goosebumps I yell at the model to come over to where I was standing (she was also looking around the abandoned house). I showed her the room, and I told her my vision. I walked to the middle of the room (goosebumps alerting me of something) and I grabbed a stool that was near by. I placed the stool in the center of the room and I told the model to stand on it and show NO expressions whatsoever. She did it (I LOVE brave models). I took the shot and this is what I got!

I proceeded to edit the photo.

Some people see a girl being hung, but that was not the vision I was looking for. Those wires were just a coincidence. The original intent was to make her appear as if she was floating. Regardless, whatever someone see's can still be pretty powerful. An unintended result, but one that I too welcome.

Meaning behind the photograph:
The meaning behind this photo is to visually describe the innermost thoughts some people who undergo depression may sometimes experience.

Location:
This shot was taken in South Kendall.

Equipment:
Canon 40D
Tripod

Editing:
Heavy editing was done to this photograph. While editing I noticed that the model's face was WAY too underexposed. You could barely make out her face. What to so? MAKE IT EVEN MORE CREEPY! I darkened out her face completely and drew a sinister looking face. I remember using red and white paintbrush with different opacity settings. It took me about a week to make this face. I have a weak stomach for scary things (as I write this at 2:18am, Elena walks into my office and scares the heck out of me!!). Anyways, I have a weak stomach for scary things, so this was one of the more difficult edits Ive ever done.

The model stood on a stool, which I then removed in photoshop.

Noteworthy:

  • On some sites, like MM, this photo was labeled as "X-Rated". I suppose a mod on that site got the hebejebes.
  • On MM, this is my most "Favorited" photograph with over 144 comments, 69 lists, and about 4.5k views.
  • Was offered $1,600 to sell the full rights to this photograph but I declined.

About the Photo - Death of a Mermaid

I took this photograph about a year or so ago. I call this one, "Death of a Mermaid". The idea came to me when I was watching Disney's "The Little Mermaid". There was a scene where Ariel was being chased by sharks and I wondered, "What would happen if the shark did get her?". I giggled to myself and paid no mind.

Meaning behind the photograph:
What I was trying to say behind this photograph is that life is not just about sitting on beach rocks bathing under the sun, with rainbows overhead. Life is pretty full of bullshit at times and no matter how rosy or pretty one wants to paint life as, it's actually full of the opposite. In my world, the sharks get Ariel and her stupid little friend too.
Location:
This shot was taken in Miami Beach.

Equipment:
Camera - 5DMKII
Lighting Equipment
  • Alien Bee 800
  • White Beauty Dish
  • Vagabond II
Editing:
This photograph has some editing done, but the majority of it was focused on making the fin appear as real as possible. It was actually pretty difficult but I did the best that I could. The blood in the water was the easy part.

Noteworthy:
The model for this shot asked to remain anonymous. She never modeled before but she did phenomenal and was a great sport!. This is another favorite in my collection.

Emotional Roller Coaster

This is a photograph I took a few years ago. It was done using a technique called high dynamic range (HDR). HDR basically consists of mixing multiple photographs into one for a specific desired effect. The thing I do though is that I do HEAVY Photoshop manipulation after I have merged the photos. No, this is NOT tone mapping as some may suggest. There is NO such thing as "true" HDR. If it was created using multiple photos, it's HDR, not tone mapping. HDR is HDR. In fact, this photo consists of 16 different photographs. It's a technique and just one step towards achieving a specific look I enjoy when working with the technique. It's something I created when messing with Photoshop a few years ago.

Meaning behind the photograph:
A few years ago I would go about having mood swings. One day I'd be happy, another I'd be sad. At times I was also depressed. We all have heard the term "Emotional Roller coaster" right? As with everything, I had few people I could speak with regarding the things that tormented me. My only escape was my photography. This was my attempt to visually express some of the emotions and feelings I was going through at the time. This photo is one of my personal favorites.

Location:
This shot was taken in Downtown Miami at night.

Equipment:
Camera - EOS 40D
Tripod

Editing:
I heavily edited the environment. The original photo was too "clean". I wanted something more dirty. I wanted something darker, not so pleasant.  The walls was the first thing I decided to change. The model, Monica (if I remember correctly) was too nice looking, so I too edited her skin a bit to roughen her up.

Noteworthy:
I am writing a paper about this photograph for one of my classes at FIU.
